Salt Slabs | Father's Day Is Coming!

Posted by The Salt Lady on Jun 17th 2020

If you're looking for a last minute father's day gift, our salt blocks might be the perfect thing!

Salt blocks (or salt slabs) just go right onto the grate and heat with the grill...

you can cook right on top of it with no additional seasoning needed! They're also amazing for serving things like veggies, fruit, cheeses, charcuterie, or sashimi (if you're brave). Keep reading for some tips on using them, and some fun recipe ideas!

Tips for using your salt block:

• Be sure to heat it slowly. Quick changes in temperature might cause cracking or breaking in your salt block.

If you're using it on a charcoal grill, start your coals on one side of the grill, and heat the block on the other side while the coals work their magic.

If heating on a gas range, heat your salt slab incrementally from low, to medium, to high, waiting 10-15 minutes between each. You'll want the final temp of your slab to be around 500 degrees.

• Make sure your salt slab is totally dry before heating. Heating a salt block that is not totally dry can result cracking. This is fairly simple to avoid if the slab is wiped clean after use and stored in a clean, dry place.

• Be sure your salt block is heated through before placing your meat or veggies to cook. As I mentioned above, you'll get a nice sear if it's heated to around 500 degrees.

• Once your salt block is heated to temp it will maintain high heat for long periods of time so be sure to take advantage of it!

• Himalayan salt holds a natural antimicrobial surface. You can clean it by running it under water and lightly scraping off any bits that the water misses. Be sure you do not submerge your salt block in water, and do not use soap!

Pat dry with a paper towel and store in a dry place.

• Replace your block after many uses when it gets too small to function well.

Don't want to heat it up? Here are some tasty cold food ideas for using your salt slab... great additions to any meal:

• Burrata cheese and fresh figs... Serve with a drizzle of honey on fresh, crusty bread or crackers.

• Thinly sliced, seared steak sprinkled with some chopped green onion and a little fresh ground pepper. Serve as is or on toasted bread with a smear of goat cheese or a bit of horseradish.

• Slice up some of your favorite fresh salad veggies and serve as a side to your favorite meal.

• Toss on some cubed watermelon with a bit of feta and cucumbers. Drizzle with a balsamic reduction.
